First Impression of New Makeup | Mini Reviews + Haul

by - 1:30 PM

Hi Dolls and Gents,

Today, I am bringing a two in one blog post. Instead of doing a normal haul, I wanted to do a first impression instead. I think this is a great way to get the genuine reaction of people when they are trying something for the first time before they find ways to tweak it and make it work for them. So, these reactions I have written here, I literally my genuine reaction and I made sure of it!

I also created a monochromatic tutorial with these products and I will be posting it after this goes up.

If you would like to see my haul and first impression then keep on reading.

I bought all of these products from Sephora, NYX and my local beauty supply store. I will link everything below.

Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer | Travel Size | $24

Honestly, why does it look purple on my face? The first thought that comes to my head. This primer has been raved one of the best primers for oily skin. I have to say that I like it so far. It is smooth and it reduces the appearance of my pores so that is a plus. I like the texture of it on my skin. It feels smooth to the touch. The primer is runny, was not expecting that. So far so good. I haven't tested out oil control yet. When I apply foundation the purple cast does not show through.

NYX Mirco Brow Pencil in Espresso| Full Size|$12

I have mixed feeling about this pencil, mostly about the colour choice. The pencil it self is is nice waxy yet creamy pencil. It is not a hard wax, like the Brow Wiz, but it is not creamy like the Colourpop Brow Pencil. You don't have to press hard to get the colour to show up on the skin. The only thing that bothers me is the colour. Espresso is a tad too light than what I am using currently, which is ABH Dipbrow Pomade in Ebony and I have used the Brow Wiz in Ebony as well too. It doesn't look bad, but I would rather get the colour Black, which is a blackened brown or just mix both of them together.

NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Foundation in Deep Dark | Full Size |$11

OMG, the worst colour choice. The NYX sales associate really screwed me over. The colour of this foundation is too dark. There is no way I can make it work at all. It literally can be used a contour for my face. Unless I get really dark this summer, this foundation does not match me at all. The NYX sales associate told me that it looks dark in the bottle, but when blended out it will match me. I know that is true for some foundation. But NO, it literally it is literally too dark for me and it is ashy and grey looking on my skin. I definitely have to go up a shade or get the NYX Pro Mixer to add warmth and lighten it. You must be thinking, Maame, you can mix other foundation or return it. I did try to mix other foundations, I added the MAC Studio Fix and sample of Tarte Rainforest of Sea Water Foundation and it was still too dark. Do not get me started on the return policy. I can not return it because the seal is broken, so I am basically stuck with it. On the brighter side, the coverage of this foundation is medium to buildable. It is not a completely matte foundation. It is not oil free, there is some oil in the foundation. The consistency is not runny or thick and it comes in a squeeze tube.

Black Opal True Colour Finishing Powder in Deep | Full Size | $13.99

This powder follows the claims it has on the box. Black Opal describes this powder as a soft velvet finishing powder that soft focus the skin and reduces the appearance of pores and control shine. Well, I have to say that I totally agree with the soft focus effect. It literally looked like someone airbrushed my face and my pores were reduced. I set my face with this on half of my face and use another powder for the other half of my face, which I will talk about soon. I purchase the colour Deep because of swatching dark in the store, I knew it would be too light for me. Deep is the perfect colour for me, it reminds of the LaurMercier translucent powder in Medium/Deep or Cover FX translucent powder in Deep. It also added warmth to my face, since the foundation was too dark and ashy for my skin tone. I believe this powder is the new replacement for the Deluxe Finishing powder. I am really enjoying it so far.

Ruby Kisses Set n Forget Setting Powder in Rich|Full Size |$6.99

Now, this powder is the same company that I always get my pressed powder from. The setting powder claim to last 16 HRS. I have not tried it for that long, but I can say that it is a matte setting powder. It is somewhat translucent, I feel. It seems to add some coverage. You can feel the powder sitting on your face, but other than that I really like this powder. I bought the colour Rich which is the darkest shade and there is a tint of colour. When I applied it to the other half of my face, I noticed that it matched me and it provided a smooth finish, but when you touch your face you can feel the powder. Definitely like this powder, just need to play with is so more.

NYX Butter Gloss in Gingersnap | Full Size | $9.00

OMG, I have found my new nude lip gloss for dark skin. I have been wanting this lip gloss for a while now. I was actually looking into getting this for graduation, but it was sold out, for good reason. It literally the perfect nude gloss for women of colour. It is a chocolate brown. This is my first butter gloss lip gloss and the shine on this gloss is out of this world and it is definitely smooth and silky. You can build up this gloss without getting the sticky feeling of gloss.

I hope you guys enjoyed this first impression of new makeup. I am glad, I did this. I got to share my thoughts with guys on my impressions of these products. In my next post, I will be posting the look I created using these products and some products I haven't used on my blog yet.

Don't forget to comment and share. See you in my next post.
